Quantitative observation of magnetic flux distribution in new magnetic films for future high density recording media.

Off-axis electron holography was used to observe and quantify the magnetic microstructure of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropic (PMA) recording media. Thin foils of PMA materials exhibit an interesting up and down domain configuration. These domains are found to be very stable and were observed at the same time with their stray field, closing magnetic flux in the vacuum. The magnetic moment c...

Microstructural and Crystallographic Aspects of Thin Film Recording Media

Various aspects of the structure of thin film longitudinal recording media are presented and discussed. In particular we discuss the role that the various layers of thin film media play in controlling the microstructure and magnetic properties of the magnetic layer. These include the grain size of the films, the texture of the films, the role of the intermediate layer and the role of chemical s...

High Anisotropy CoPtCrB Magnetic Recording Media

We describe the synthesis, magnetism and structure of CoPtCrB alloys with Pt concentrations from 10 43 %. The Cr concentration in the alloys was 15-17 % and the B concentration was 9-11 %. The magnetic anisotropy and coercivity increase with increasing Pt up to M 30%, plateau at M 35,000 Oe and w 6000 Oe, respectively, and then decrease. Transmission electron microscopy results show the media f...

Effects of stacking faults on magnetic viscosity in thin film magnetic recording media

There is much interest in crystallographic defects in thin film magnetic recording media and their role in influencing recording performance such as media noise and thermal loss. In this article we report a correlation between the magnetic viscosity in CoPtCr thin film media, which is the origin of thermal loss effects, and the concentration of local fcc-like regions. The concentration of these...
